The cornerstone of the new fire station which was built in 2000
is a museum that houses our 1927 Prospect Master Deluge Pumper
which stands front and center among various exhibits
highlighting firefighting history in East Petersburg. Only
one-tenth in size of the modern fire truck the Master Deluge
shows the evolution of fire trucks over the years. A basic
open-air truck body the Master Deluge built by the Prospect Fire
Engine Company was a gasoline powered water pump that was
capable of pumping 400 gallons per minute which was the latest
technology at that time. Along with the
Master Deluge you find a stack of buckets and wooden ladders no
longer than 15 feet which reminds visitors of the days when
bucket brigades were as common as today's computer controlled
equipment, GPS and infrared heat seeking equipment designed to
locate victims in a smoke filled room.
Many pictures of fire scenes, past and present to which East
Petersburg firefighters have responded, along with pictures of
East Petersburg's fire equipment throughout the history can be
seen along the walls leading to the museum.
Visitors can see examples of primative first aid kits, handheld
fire extinguishers, and antique self contained breathing
apparatus and turnout gear among other exhibits of
fire axes, lights, lanterns, bells, badges and old sirens. |
